The Disney Showman (Unexpected Musical) â PattyCake Productions music video

Nostalgia can be a powerful force. The Greatest Showman portrays P.T. Barnum as a dreamer who wanted to entertain people above all else. There is a very similar air to the general perception of Walt Disney. Both men were, of course, much more complicated than their public personas, but the parallels were too strong for the PattyCake guys to resist. Especially since both Tony and Layne had worked at Disney World, performed on Disney cruises, and collaborated on projects with the company at large. So combining the Showman music with a visual retrospective of Walt's life was a perfect fit.

Trivia:
The actors playing young Walt Disney and Shirley Temple are siblings.
James is yet another of Tony's fellow alumni from the "Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue" show at Universal Studios, having played BJ himself for many years.
The subtle special effects makeup that transformed James into Walt was created by Andy Wright at Makeup and Creative Arts, and was applied by Rick Underwood.
This video was filmed on location at the MBS Equipment Company warehouse space in Orlando, using some of their lighting equipment. There is also additional footage from both Disneyland and Disney World.
PattyCake garnered some praise from several of their fellow former theme park cast members in the YouTube comments for both the accuracy of the behind-the-scenes imagery and the celebration of the Disney legacy.
As they did with their "La La Land" video, PattyCake highlighted their attention to detail with a series of "Double Take" posts on social media, comparing shots from the video with the iconic moments they had recreated.
As a bonus, the thumbnail for the video itself is a recreation of a photo of Disney that was also used as the cover art for PBS's episode of American Experience about him.

Today marks the birthdate of the truly legendary DON VAN VLIET â the artist formerly known as the founder of the MAGIC BAND. Accordingly, MFF is presenting a two-part homage to CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, which features: the best available live performances; all of his official recordings; lots of alternative takes; a variety of entertaining poetry readings; and galleries from his major art exhibitions.
A MONUMENTAL PRODIGY OF IMAGINATION â a retrospective by David D. Fowler
For one fleeting, golden moment, the most uncompromisingly experimental album in the history of rock music outsold hit recordings by the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones.
The album was TROUT MASK REPLICA; and the occasion was the death of its chief creator, one Don Van Vliet â better known as the formidable Captain Beefheart. The good Captain sailed his stalwart ship into the next worldâs ocean on December 17, 2010.
By that time, Trout Mask had long ago earned its status as an iconic work of art â a wild and rigorous concoction of surreal lyrics, crazed blues and free jazz explosions, imposed on a foundation of highly structured electric polyrhythms. It was the product of a creative confrontation between the brilliant and sometimes tyrannical Van Vliet, and the innovative virtuosos of the Magic Band.
To the best of my knowledge, Beefheart ceased recording music in the early 1980s; but the legacy of the music has been perpetuated in recent years, by further performances and recordings featuring members of various incarnations of the Magic Band. Â
Don Van Vliet was a monumental talent, on the order of Igor Stravinsky, Pablo Picasso, and James Joyce â and he excelled in the art forms of each of those masters: music, painting and writing. While best known for the musical output of his Beefheart persona, Van Vliet had two other key artistic phases.
He first drew attention as a child prodigy, crafting clay sculptures of animals on a community TV show. He pursued music in his early 20s; and after close to two decades of performing, recording, and struggling with record companies, he abandoned music and the Beefheart moniker â and started a new career as a painter, under his legal name.
In this final phase, which lasted for more than 25 years, he achieved a high degree of recognition for his quirky subject matter and vivid use of color; and for the first time, he managed to make a decent living from his creative endeavors.
But it is primarily Van Vlietâs music which has secured his status as a 20th century giant. In addition to Trout Mask, his most unconventional work can be found on albums such as LICK MY DECALS OFF BABY, SAFE AS MILK, MIRROR MAN, SHINY BEAST, STRICTLY PERSONAL, DOC AT THE RADAR STATION, ICE CREAM FOR CROW, and the original version of BAT CHAIN PULLER.
He stretched artistic boundaries in a unique and refreshing way. The resulting audio conglomeration incorporated explorations of complex and jaggedly dissonant melodic inventions; densely evocative flights of poetry; spontaneous and uninhibited jazz improvisation; quirky and unexpected bits of humour; and fiery blues vocalizing that took no prisoners.
In the process, he influenced some of the more significant figures of the past several decades, including performance artist LAURIE ANDERSON, art rock goddess PJ HARVEY, Talking Heads mastermind DAVID BYRNE, Pere Ubu trickster DAVID THOMAS, Public Image Limited maverick JOHN LYDON, and renaissance humanoid TOM WAITS,
Probably the best presentation of his musical output is a CD box set of rarities entitled GROW FINS, released in 1999, which provides an excellent overview of Van Vlietâs 16-year stint as the Captain. It contains many unreleased gems from his earlier years, and a good variety of live tracks spanning his entire career.
It also includes a CD of backing tracks from the Trout Mask sessions, which reveals how extraordinarily disciplined the music actually was, under the surface chaos. The big selling point is an enhanced CD of performance footage from the late â60s and early '70s. The creativity of the manâs work was awe-inspiring, and this fine release does him real justice. Â
Another way to remember the man, of course, is through his paintings. The finest showcases of his paintings are in two books: STAND UP TO BE DISCONTINUED; and SKELETON BREATH, SCORPION BLUSH. I readily concede that much of Van Vlietâs more eccentric musical expressions can be an acquired taste. But once the unwary pilgrim stumbles upon and succumbs to the siren lure of his gentle, dulcet tones and soothing maladies (um, melodies), she or he will run the risk of becoming forever enthralled.
Some of the very finest pearls of Beefheartâs musical imagination can be found in the BEEF BROTH, BEEF ALTS, and BEEF STEW playlists. They include lots of outstanding concert recordings; intriguing outtakes; imaginative videos by PlasticDada II, and various other fans; and numerous collaborations with FRANK ZAPPA.
Also featured are key folks I like to call 21st Century Quakers. I'm referring to gifted musicians who have continued to perform Van Vliet's challenging music â such as NONA HENDRYX, FREDDIE WADLING, JOLENE GRUNBERG, and MIKE WATT. Most notably, I appreciate the work of JOHN FRENCH, MARK BOSTON, DENNY WHALLEY, and other members of the revived MAGIC BAND â as well as alumni such as GARY LUCAS, MORIS TEPPER, BILL HARKELROAD, and JEFF COTTON.

Art Ainât A Mirror, Itâs A Hammer (Part 3 of 3)
Thanks to rapidly advancing tech, the person on the receiving end of the digital food chain who just wants to be entertained will only need to push a button -- or utter a word, or think a thought, or perhaps not even do that but passively accept whatever the gods of the algorithms decide to present. AI (or whatever that evolves into) will pick a genre / story / style / cast based on their prior responses to earlier entertainment and generate a brand-new entertainment for them.
As Rick Beato points out, the overwhelming majority of the audience Simply Wonât Care if their entertainment is provided by a real human being with genuine thoughts and emotions, or by a program that can fake it. To be honest, this does open up a new field of content creation, especially for those proficient at screenwriting.Â
Writers who can create original highly detailed screenplays -- "directing on paper" in the old animation writing style -- to be translated into cartoons / concerts / short subjects / mini-series / grand operas will find their creativity in demand. This will create a market for brand name writers the same way Stephen King or Danielle Steele are brand names regardless of the actual stories they write. Audiences will never actually read what they create but will need simply say "Show me the latest David Gerrold story" and it will unfold before them.
The stories can be calibrated for individual tastes and predilections. The kids can watch a G-rated James Bond adventure where 007 uses a variety on non-lethal gadgets supplied by Q to capture the supervillain while mom and dad can view an NC-17 version loaded down with blood & guts / tits & ass / sex & death.
(Sidebar: Creators will enjoy a secondary revenue stream of product placement, taking fees from companies to have characters use those brands in stories.)
While it will be possible to permanently record any version of any entertainment, a big appeal will be how each retelling will be slightly different, slightly unexpected the same way a play is never performed exactly the same way twice.
It will be a new art form with a new language, a new style.
We canât leave it to soulless machines and programs.
We need human hearts and minds, thoughts and emotions to hammer out a future culture.

Weâre not going to avoid the intrusion of AI into every aspect of our lives.
Itâs already here and weâre already interacting with it.
We are going to see rapid technical and cultural changes as a result.
Remember Mary Quantâs miniskirt.
Nothing prevented anyone from wearing an extremely short skirt before 1963, and some show biz types did wear them when performing.
But Quant said, âHey, wouldnât it be kicky to wear this right now out in public?â
Not the deepest intellectual idea ever expressed, true.
But definitely a very human idea.
And it resounded with her audience / customer base.
And they took that silly little piece of fabric and used it to help them change the world.
If no one provides art with ideas, audiences will create their own meaning.
That could mean a golden age if that audience wanted ideas.
But from what we know of human history, the overwhelming majority donât want to think, they just want to be entertained.
Bread and circuses.
I may be misremembering, but I recall in John Brunnerâs classic sci-fi novel Stand On Zanzibar thereâs a spaced out druggie couch potato who pops up periodically in the book, watching TV and crooning to himself, âMan, what an imagination Iâve gotâŠâ
The irony, of course, is that the character possesses no imagination, hardly even thinks at all.
He just observes the media unfolding before him and utterly fails to grasp the message.
He can attach no meaning to it on his own because he possesses no frame of reference.
We the artists, the creators must stay in the struggle to provide meaning to the world.

A/N: This was a very entertaining request and it took a while because every day I feel like I'm going to pass out from nausea haha. But writing is super relaxing for me.
I was hoping it would be shorter and now I feel like something was missing, but I hope you like it. Especially you, nonny!

(The title refers to the song of one direction because it reminded me a lot of its lyrics)
"If you had to choose between a chocolate-flavored shit and a shit-flavored chocolate, what would you choose?" he murmured, his voice echoing through the room.
You and your friends were in the common room in the so-called âstudy groupâ that Remus had insisted on creating for the Defense Against the Dark Arts class and ended up with topics from the other subjects. It was true that everyone fulfilled the boy's whims, because none had the heart to say no to something (which he often took advantage of) and now every afternoon you met to read some documents, comment on your doubts and practice spells and even potions.
But if anyone couldn't take things seriously, he was Sirius.
The only thing that kept it there was his love for Moony and also the opportunity to watch you study for a full hour. Or watch you do anything, to be honest.
Everyone frowned at Sirius' question, not understanding the nature of it. James, who was the only one who could listen to him, was busy analyzing a herbology book in detail. And by analyzing I mean sleeping on top of it.
âThe chocolate-flavored shit, of course. What good would it do you to have chocolate if it tastes awful?" you answered seriously. Suddenly all eyes in the room were on you and most of them seemed half disgusted half confused. "What? Sirius asked" you said shrugging your shoulders and pointing at him with an open palm. The young man grinned widely and you returned the same smile, both of you holding back the urge to laugh.
"I can always trust you, pretty," he said happily. "And now that I think about it, you're very far from me, don't you think? Let me get closerâ he murmured determinedly, getting up from his seat with a book in hand and all the intention of placing himself in the same armchair as you. But halfway there an arm stopped him abruptly.
"Go back to your seat," Remus demanded, not looking away from his book. Sirius complained.
"Why?" he said indignantly. You turned your gaze to the notes you were analyzing, but the smile on your mouth didn't fade and Sirius noticed.
âBecause having the two of you together is having a time bomb. Go back to your seat,â he murmured just as seriously. Sirius watched him and in the middle of his tantrum he wrinkled his whole face trying to imitate Remus "I can see you Sirius"
"Since you've been a prefect, you have become unbearable," he muttered.
"What did you say?"
"Nothing," he replied like a little boy, dropping on the couch and taking the book from him again in the middle of a snort. You watched him with amusement and he stared back at you, so you mouthed âBetter luck next time as he looked back at his notes. You felt Sirius's gaze, it was not something easy to ignore, but you tried not to stop yourself from the spirit from passing all the subjects that had suddenly invaded you.
When you couldn't take it anymore you looked up and again mouthed âWhat?â Trying not to get caught by Remus. Sirius sneakily pointed to a scroll and his quill and you knew what it was all about.
Turns out that Sirius was extremely smart when he put his mind to it and he himself had enchanted a couple of scrolls that only you and he knew about. When you wrote in one, it was reflected in the other and when you finished whatever you were writing this was erased. At first you had not believed him because doing that involved very advanced magic and Sirius was not the archetype of an exemplary student to do that. But once you tried them you realized that you had indeed underestimated the boy and the curiosity to know the most intelligent and creative part of him invaded you. I mean, he was when it came to the pranks but you never imagined a Sirius smart underneath the idler you knew.
Y/N, can I ask you a very personal question? he wrote it. You tried not to sound too concerned and replied:
You can do it, but I can decide not to answer it. It turned out that Sirius was really weird lately and you were worried about what he might say, but usually it was pure nonsense.
The scroll went blank and you waited a few seconds for Sirius's pretty handwriting to appear. You tried not to look at him too much because you knew beforehand that he would get a scolding from Mr. Lupin.
Are you a dementor? he wrote.
You frowned at the words, searching for some logical explanation for his absurd question. Obviously you weren't. Sirius, seeing your confused face, supported a giggle and wrote again.
Because you take my breath away.
You read the words, going over one by one, and couldn't bear the urge to look at Sirius over your glasses with that annoyed look that you liked to fake so he wouldn't notice that you actually liked his scoundrel flirtations.
That was horrible, Sirius.
I made you blush so I don't think it was that bad.
Of course I didn't do that.
Of course you did. He wrote. And you didn't want to look at him because you knew you would just agree with him and blush even more. You look beautiful when you do that, he added. You bit your lip and looked at the parchment for a few seconds just before writing on it.
Stop saying such things to me, Sirius.
What do you say? What do I continue to say to you my best compliments and flattering your qualities? Perfect.
You stifled a laugh and shook it softly, keeping that smile that Sirius loved to observe.
You considered him a wonderful, handsome and kind boy, who was always looking for a way to make you laugh. The spark between you was something that everyone could perceive, including yourself.
I need to study, Sirius. Goodbye. You wrote and that ended your little talk.
For the rest of the hour all your attention was focused on the topics you were studying: Aconite (also known as monkshood or wolfsbane) a mundane plant with magical properties. The name had seemed funny to you and Remus had assured that it had nothing to do with werewolves.
Herbology was a very simple class for you, especially with the help that sometimes the best student in the class gave you: Frank Longbottom.
"Well, the hour is up, do you want to discuss any of the issues or...?" he was interrupted by Sirius abruptly closing the book and who with a wave of his wand put away all his notes "Everyone except Sirius, would you like to discuss something?" he asked, rolling his eyes at the brunette's innocent smile.
You all denied and Lupin ended the meeting. Everyone scattered in different directions, including James who seemed to have magically awakened as soon as the hour was up, but you stayed in the sitting room with your feet tucked up on the red velvet chair.
"What happens?" Sirius asked from behind, not noticing your presence. He jumped onto the couch and flopped into it.
"Nothing, do I need to go where everyone goes all the time?" you asked raising an eyebrow. The boy smiled and shook his head as he leaned on one of his hands, closing the distance between you. "Weren't you the one who was dying to get out of here?"
"Correction: I wanted the session to end, at no time did I speak about the company" he replied and you smiled "Speaking of which, I was thinking..."
"You think?"
âWhen I want to do it, yes,â he said amused âBut let me talk and then you make fun of me. I was thinking that this weekend we are going to Hogsmeade and I was wondering if you wanted to go somewhere "
"Sure!" You answered animatedly and his eyes lit up "Will the others go too?" You continued, but the boy was suddenly disappointed.
"Hmm, I was thinking of something... different."
"Different?"
âYeah, something like⊠you know, you and me. Aloneâ
And with that, you were paralyzed in your place.
You'd been alone with him countless times, just like that time, but it was one thing to chat in his common room or in class and quite another to ask you out at Hogsmeade.
"Oh, sure. Something like⊠a walk or shopping for chocolate frogs at Honeydukes, right?" you said quickly, trying not to show your nerves.
"Hmm, I could think of something else like Madam Puddifoot's Tea Shop," he said with a smile. You gulped and watched him with concern. That place was usually full of cheesy couples. "Even though I have all those pink things, I could take them if I'm with you..."
"No," you said abruptly. Sirius was silent and you watched his smile diminish considerably. âI mean, no⊠I don't wish we were alone. We are always accompanied by the group, why not do it now?â you asked with an awkward smile. The boy was close to you and apparently he did not expect that answer, as his face reflected it quite well. But you were too busy with nerves eating your stomach to notice.
"Uh... yeah, I guess I'll tell them then" he exclaimed softly.
"Yes! It will be more fun and we can go for butterbeer if you want. And I could buy you those sweets that you like, what do you say? " you asked trying to sound a little more animated. Sirius was good at pretending and his disappointed look on his was replaced by a smile in an instant.
"Yes, that would be fine" he replied. His hand traveled to your cheek and he ran over it gently, resting at the base of your jaw for a moment. His hands were callused and very large compared to yours "Then we will go with everyone, as always" he sighed. His hand went up a bit and you felt him tug at your earlobe.
"Hey!" you screamed trying to reach for her head to hit her. Sirius dodged it quite skillfully and it made you laugh.
"I think I'll go to my room. See you tomorrow?" he murmured with a tight-lipped smile as he rose from the couch.
"Sure, see you tomorrow" you replied in the same way, watching him walk towards the exit. You released your contained breath and let your head fall against the back of the chair, processing what had just happened.
You were very sure of what Sirius had tried to do and you didnât understand the reason for your reaction. I mean, you had completely paralyzed shortly after blatantly flirting with the boy. You had had many dates in your life, why would this be any different?
You looked down the hall where Sirius had gone and remembered his disappointed fase. Should you go look for him?
No, maybe it was best to just let it go and gradually he would forget about it. Yes, that would be the best.
You looked at the seat where he had previously been and you also touched your cheek, hoping you could relive the touch that he had given you. For a few seconds you felt guilty that you responded so rudely to his request, but then you simply shook your head to drive those thoughts away.
"I should be sleeping" you thought aloud. You weren't even sleepy and it wasn't even too late, but you imagined it would be easier to lie down on the bed and not think about it anymore.
You took your things in silence and climbed the stone stairs, leaving behind that memory that you hoped would soon be forgotten.
It had been a few days since that incident and luckily things hadn't changed at all between you and Sirius. He really seemed to have forgotten what happened, so the weekend trip to Hogsmeade unfolded in the most normal way in the world.
Sirius was still flirtatious as ever, teasing you and taking every opportunity to be close to you. You liked his company, he made you feel quite calm and you always had something to talk about. If it wasn't this, it was that, and when you weren't talking you were laughing.
"How could you not fall asleep in Slughorn's class?" James asked. His head hung from the ledge where he was lying and played with his glasses. "The only thing that could distract me was Snivellus's voice."
"Don't call him that," Lily said in a stern voice and you snorted.
âWhy do you defend him so much? " you asked wrinkling your nose. Lily looked at you just as seriously.
"Because heâs my friend and he does not deserve to be mistreated like that"
"Mistreat?" you asked incredulously âHave you heard him mocking us along with his entourage of snooty Slytherins? Who you should take care of should be that Lucius and Regulus" you said rolling your eyes "No offense, Sirius" you added. The boy was leaning against the wall with his tie unbuttoned resting on his shoulders.
"It's not offensive, it's the truth" he murmured amused, shrugging and giving you a smile.
Lily didn't say anything else, but she seemed annoyed and she didn't speak for the rest of the afternoon. Peter and James started arguing about things you weren't really interested in so you decided to focus on the scribbles you were drawing on a worn parchment.
You felt an extra pressure next to you on the couch and it wasn't even necessary to look to know who he was.
"What are you doing?"
"Nothing" you said simply, keeping your eyes on your scroll.
"Can I talk to you?"
"You are doing it" you replied with a smile. Sirius rolled his eyes and took the quill from your hand, forcing you to look at him.
"Can I talk to you alone?" he asked seriously. Oh no, trouble again...
"Why alone, dear?" you said as a joke. Sirius was too close to you and you tried not to get flustered by it "Is there something you need to say to me that others can't hear?" you asked with a tight-lipped smile, the kind you wear when you're uncomfortable with something.
Sirius cleared his throat and scratched the back of his neck unconsciously. You knew he did that when he was nervous.
"Well... to tell the truth something like that" he murmured with a smile. You felt your heart beat faster "Do you think we can go to my room?" he asked.
"To your room?" you said, your voice an octave higher than normal.
"Yeah, you've been there a thousand times," he laughed.
"Eh, is what you have to tell me very urgent?" you asked. You were a bundle of nerves and you really didn't understand what it was.
"Yeah boo, it's important," he said gently. His hand traveled to yours and took your fingers against his. You turned pale because he didn't say urgent but important.
âSo, uh, come on. The faster the better, right?" you expressed nervous. You got up from your place and walked to the bedrooms without looking back. You heard an almost deathly silence in the common room and then laughter, but you didn't have time to look when Sirius was already shoving you from the lower back.
The walk to his room was very silent, the first omen that something bad was about to happen. Once you were in his bedroom he let you in first and closed the door behind you, managing to startle you with the simple sound of the latch.
"Why are you closing the door?" you asked nervously, with the volume of your voice considerably louder. Sirius noticed this and quickly removed the latch he had placed on the door.
"I just didn't want to be bothered, that's all," he said with a frown "You're a bit strange, are you sure you don't mind being here with me?"
"No, no, nothing like that" you rushed to reply, waving your hands in an exaggerated way. Sirius found it cute when you did that "You're the one who's suddenly strange, I'm not"
"Yeah, maybe I've been behaving a little weird lately" he smiled, in that way that reminded you of a child "But I promise you it's for good reason, in fact it's what I want to talk to you about" he started to say.
You panicked, total panic screaming at you to get out of there at all costs. The look Sirius gave you, the nervous posture of him and the way he was smiling at you. You knew what that was.
"McGonagall!" You screamed out of nowhere before he could continue
"Excuse me?"
âI forgot that I have a very important meeting with McGonagall, to see the matter of one of my grades. It is essential that I go today and I forgot, can we have this talk later? " you said clasping your hands in a sign of prayer.
Sirius looked, for the second time, disappointed.
"Sure, school is more important," he replied, trying not to sound affected. You grinned widely and walked in the direction of the exit, eager to leave his room.
"Thank you Sirius, you are an angel"
"I know I look like one, but I'm not quite sure I am," he joked, but his smile was not as bright as before. You laughed in response and stood on the balls of his feet to place a kiss on his cheek.
"See you later, I promise," you murmured hastily, leaving without giving him a chance to say anything else.
"Yes... I can wait" Sirius spoke to himself, with a hurt tone. He released his breath and lay down on his respective bed, staring at the ceiling. He felt something strange in his chest, something that wanted him to cry out.
You walked down the hallways, desperate to get away from the questions he might have asked, and when you were outside your common room you didn't stop. On the contrary, you ran and ran through the corridors hoping that no one would find you.
You didn't stop until you were outside the castle, until you were on the same black lake. And once there, you collapsed to cry.
You entered through the portrait of the fat lady, making sure to remove your shoes first so as not to make noise when entering. It was late and you had spent all day wandering the castle only to never return to your common room, wearing James's cloak so as not to be discovered.
It had been a few other days since you spoke to him and you still didn't feel ready to face him. Especially when, that afternoon, you had come to your room totally agitated and your two companions had bombarded you with questions.
Did he already tell you? they asked. What was he supposed to say? What was that important thing that Sirius was going to do that you had avoided?
The worst thing was that you already knew, that was the reason for your flight. Your mind knew what was going to happen and refused to accept it.
But you had also wanted it, you had been waiting for that question for years and now you were simply hiding from everyone so you wouldn't have to face that change.
"I was wondering where you were," said a voice in the dark, making you jump instead. The fireplace was off and the darkness did not allow you to see well who it was, but it was not necessary because you recognized his words perfectly âWell, I was not wondering where because I have this wonderful map to which we all owe a lot, but I was wondering whyâ he murmured showing you 'The Marauder's Map'. It was night, you couldn't move anywhere anymore and you knew that sooner or later that moment had to come. Still in the dark you saw the silhouette of him get up from the couch and walk in your direction "Are you avoiding me?"
"Sirius..."
"Of course you're avoiding me," he answered himself. The boy took a step towards you and your reaction was to walk two steps back. Sirius stifled a laugh âThat's what I refer. Whenever you seem to move towards me and I get closer, you move further away" he muttered. You thought that maybe he was not only referring to the literal part of the sentence âI don't blame you, but I sincerely wonder why you do it. I am a very curious boyâ he expressed somewhat ironic. His words hurt because you knew you couldn't give him an explanation "And you're very smart, I'd say too much, and I'm sure you knew my intentions from the moment I asked to speak to you, right?" he continued. He took another step towards you, you stepped back "Do you not like me? You can say no and I will never blame you, but I would have preferred a no sincere to the uncertainty in which I find myselfâ he explained. Another step, another step "Won't you say anything?" he asked without losing his temper. You were surprised by how calmly he could react to all situations when you were struggling to stay on your feet.
"Sirius, it's not what it seems" you tried to justify yourself. But the man said nothing, because you knew he wanted a more substantial answer than that. You refused to look at him and felt him take another step in your direction, repeating the previous sequence. But this time you felt your back crash against the stone wall and Sirius's arms at your sides, imprisoning you against it.
You looked at his clothes. He was still wearing his uniform but he looked more scruffy and some items were missing. His shirt had a three-quarter sleeve, thanks to the fact that he had picked it up himself.
"Y/N, please" he spoke in a soft voice "I do not ask you to reciprocate, I only ask you to give me an answer"
"I'm terrified Sirius!" you finally said, in a louder voice "I'm completely scared, what else do you want me to tell you?"
"Are you afraid of me?"
"I'm afraid of how you feel about me" you murmured sincerely. Maybe it was time to be honest with him, because you had no other alternative anyway. He had cornered you to it, literally âIt scares me that things will change between us, okay? And I like you too, I like you a lot, but I'm afraid of what might happen next" you whispered without looking at him. The heat that emanated from his body hugged you âI like you to tell me all those compliments, even if I say otherwise. I like when you touch our hands, I like that we escape together from class, that when we walk around the outside of the castle you cut flowers to put in my hair, I like to see you every day and I like the cute nicknames you call me with. I like everything about you, Sirius. And that's why I'm so scared of losing you" you exclaimed with a cracking voice. Sirius kept a pious gaze on you. You could feel a bit of his accelerated breath "I've had a lot of good people in my life who have ended up leaving, I don't want that to happen with you..."
"And how will you know if we don't try, love?" he spoke. His voice came out hoarse and with his hand he gently took you by the chin to force you to see him "You could have told me this before and I would have stopped insisting, or we would have discussed it as we are doing now" you looked at him, eyes clouded with tears restrained, and Sirius smiled at you tenderly "I'm not going to force you to do anything, I never would and I never will. But I would... I would like to have something with you. I really like you and if you don't agree I will respect it, but it would be a dream come true to be able to form a relationship "
"Sirius, I don't know how to do it."
"Me neither!" he said, almost excited and managed to make you smile. He carefully wiped the tears that fell from your cheeks. âWe could learn together and I promise you that if it doesn't work, I won't let you. If we are not a good couple then we will be friends again and problem solved. But how about we realize that we are ideal for each other? " he muttered. His thumb left slow and delicate caresses on your face âI don't know how to love either, nobody in my family knows how to do it and that's why I never learned to do it. But⊠being here at Hogwarts I knew what it was like to have friends, to have friends. I learned that my heart races when I see you and that I also like all those things you do for me. I like you to know what my favorite sweets are and buy them for me, I like it when you detangle my hair, when you force me to study, even if I don't like it, because you care about me. When you know that I am sad and you do everything to cheer me up, even when you call me in horrible ways and make fun of me" he laughed, making you smile too "And if you give me the opportunity I know that I can make you very happy and I would also be very happy to be with you. I planned for many days how to say these words to you, but I think now I speak from the heart when I tell you that I like you like no one else has. I'll take care of you, I promise. And I already told you that if this doesn't work, and you decide that way, we will continue to be friendsâ he concluded. In his eyes you could see that he was also nervous, that he had the same fear as you but that he was better hiding it "Now, if you want me to list the many advantages that I would have as a boyfriend, then doing it" he continued, with a more naughty tone "Don't pay too much attention to me, but I give some excellent kisses..."
"According to whom?"
"According to me!" he said obvious âIf you want to check it I am totally available. I mean, just so you know I'm not a liar," he muttered innocently, making you smile from ear to ear.
"Are you sure about this Sirius?"
"From my kisses? Of course"
"About us, you great idiot," you said rolling your eyes and gently pulling a loose lock of his long hair.
"Ouch! If you are going to insult me ââand pull my hair like that I would prefer that we were in a more private place, my dearâ he murmured flirtatiously, putting one of his hands on your waist and closing the distance between you. You looked away but he forced you to look at him again "Of course I'm sure, only if you're sure too" he replied. You sighed, feeling in your stomach a more pleasant emptiness than the previous ones.
"Then ask me"
"What do you want I ask you?"
"What were you planning to ask for days, silly" you said rolling your eyes. Sirius smirked.
"Can you let me copy your Potions project?" he said pretending to be confused and you tried to free yourself from his grip due to lack of seriousness, but he did not allow it. He took you from behind him, putting his arm around your lower back so that his torsos collided and the space between his faces was minimal. You had to lift your head to watch him, but he also looked down to save you a bit of work. His smile faded, but despite the darkness in his eyes you could glimpse a sample of the love he professed for you "Would you like me to be your boyfriend?" he asked softly.
You would remember that moment all your life, his voice low, his sounding in the middle of the darkness with the question that would start his beautiful love story.
"I wouldnât like it," you said just as seriously, looking into his eyes with a smile. Your hands went up to the back of his neck and you pulled his face gently to place a kiss on his cheek. He smiled "I would love it"

- Now, since you were one of the few females stationed in the area, it was quite common for your male coworkers and the soldiers that you met to try and flirt with and/or spend time with you. Normally, you would just be polite and excuse yourself when you could but with James it was different.Â
- The two of you had chemistry. He was entertaining, sweet; and devilishly handsome, so you had no problem with his company, especially since it seemed to keep some of the other men that you werenât fond of away.Â

- Sometimes, you make him little doodles when you can see that heâs having a bad day. He canât help but smile every time he seeâs them, even if he doesnât want to be happy. They just always seem to be able to cheer him up, even if itâs just a little.Â
- The two of you are just content to sit by each otherâs sides and do your own thing next to each other. Heâll write, read, or watch a movie and youâll make your art and itâs just perfect.Â
- He can make like a few genuinely good drawings of things, or do something relatively well if he takes his time and really tries, but half the time his art is really bad and heâs aware of it which is why heâll draw alongside you and laughingly insist that you âhave to see his masterpieceâ before showing you the atrocity that heâs committed with graphite.Â
- If you ask him about his opinion on one of your drawings, he will put on a sophisticated voice and critique and/or compliment it, using words he doesnât know the meaning of or just plain making them up as he goes.Â
- He hugs you from behind and kisses your head whenever you get frustrated with what youâre making. Sometimes even picking you up and carrying you away from what youâre doing âbefore you go on a rampageâ.Â
- Art block? Damn that shit sucks âŠwanna makeout? He isnât sure how to help you but heâll somewhat sympathize and try to resolve the issue; though he doesnât do so very well.Â
- If you ever need a reference photo, heâs happy to go out and take one for you. He may not be as skilled with a camera as Rafterman but heâs still pretty damn good.
- If you ask him to pose for you, he will ask if you want him to undress, waggling his eyebrows and slowly slipping off his coat/unbuttoning his pants; or wrapping his arms around his chest like heâs coyly covering his breasts.
- Heâll tease you when you draw him but heâll also be extra clingy with you for the rest of the day so you know that he actually really enjoyed that you did so.
- Ever wanted to hang your work up? Heâll gladly frame it for you whenever you ask him to.
- Overall, heâs really proud of you and your work and is one of your biggest fans, even if he doesnât outwardly show it constantly.Â

McFarlane Films Launches Television Division; Partners with Creators from NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM and BOJACK HORSEMAN
, Emmy-winning SPAWN creator and director/producer Todd McFarlane announced the launch of a dedicated television development and production arm of McFarlane Films. Through McFarlane Films, which has a first-look television deal with wiip (MARE OF EASTTOWN), McFarlane and his President of Television, Sean Canino, identify and develop new emerging talent, creator-owned properties, independent brands, stories, and characters.
McFarlane Films' initial television development slate includes projects from established creators such as Thomas Lennon, co-creator of RENO 911! and writer of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM; Anders Weidemann, who adapted HBO's BEARTOWN and created Paramount +'s INTERROGATION; prolific graphic-novel author, Sean Lewis; and ShadowMachine, who produced BOJACK HORSEMAN and Guillermo Del Toro's upcoming PINOCCHIO.
"Having been in development with Jason Blum at Blumhouse, along with attaching Jamie Foxx on a potential SPAWN movie franchise, other opportunities both in film and television came forward which led to this expansion in entertainment," said Todd McFarlane, McFarlane Films CEO. "Films, television, and video games are all areas I intend to spend my creative energy on a steady basis.
"I've spent decades succeeding in other business fields, going up against some of the biggest names in those industries (Marvel, DC Comics, Hasbro, and Mattel toys) and have been able to bring to market many successful products and ideas those larger companies were not able to give to consumers. In launching its new television division, McFarlane Films reveals two new premium series in development:
The first is titled McFARLAND, a stop-motion, animated event series created by Thomas Lennon in partnership with ShadowMachine and wiip. The project is described as NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM meets TOY STORY in TWIN PEAKS, which will feature original McFarlane Toys. McFarlane and Lennon will executive produce the series, along with Canino and ShadowMachine.
"It is a good bet that when you combine the forces of Todd McFarlane and Tom Lennon, good things will happen...and that those things will most likely happen in stop-motion animation. We're thrilled to be a part of the fun!," said ShadowMachine's Alex Bulkley.
McFarlane Films has also partnered with wiip and Epicenter (1BR, JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH) to develop the live-action drama series, âTHUMBSâ, based on the best-selling graphic novel written by Sean Lewis (COYOTES) with art by Hayden Sherman. Â Anders Weidemann will adapt the project. The story follows 17-year-old Charlie "Thumbs" James, gamer and social outsider, who enters an esports tournament hoping to win a scholarship from tech billionaire Adrien Camus' gamer academy so he can get his ticket out of his neighborhood. Â âThumbsâ soon finds himself fighting real life and death battles in a covert war between Camus' teenage army and a neo-fascist anti-tech movement that is about to take over the U.S. Â Weidemann, McFarlane, and Canino will executive produce, along with Allard Cantor and Jarrod Murray through Epicenter, with Lewis on-board as a producer.
"It's exciting, obviously, and a bit overwhelming as I remember buying Todd's books at my local pharmacy store," said Lewis. "And when someone wants to do your's and Hayden's comic, THUMBS, as a show, whoa! And that person is Todd McFarlane. Wait, what? I've been lucky enough to work with Todd on his comics, and he's a force of nature. He tends to will things into existence. From day one, it's just been forward momentum for this project."
Weidemann added: "The storyteller, father, and gamer within me all fell quickly and madly in love with Sean Lewis' and Hayden Sherman's graphic novel THUMBS, a vividly imaginative, fun-packed and disturbing ride into the not-too-distant future. It's a heart-pumping tale about gaming, the metaverse, and the entire fate of human existence. Simply put, it's one of those stories I'd wish I was able to watch with my 12-year-old son. Hey wait: I will."
"We were looking for a way to bring Sean Lewis's timely graphic novel to life, and we thought entrusting comics legend Todd McFarlane to lead the charge would be a great start," said Cantor and Murray. "We also couldn't ask for better studio partners than ours at wiip, who are some of the smartest and most supportive creative minds in town. So, we turned to accomplished premium series creator, Anders Weidemann, to develop a serialized narrative that will captivate audiences everywhere."
Last June, McFarlane Films announced it is developing SAM & TWITCH into a live-action TV series. Inspired by the iconic characters from McFarlane's Spawn comic, the premium drama series follows detectives Sam Burke and Max "Twitch" Williams as they fight the evils of a near-future New York City. SAM & TWITCH is being adapted by executive producers Jason Smilovic and Todd Katzberg for McFarlane Films and wiip.

Breakout noir filmmaker James Ashcroft speaks to Letterboxdâs Indigenous editor Leo Koziol about his chilling new movie Coming Home in the Darkâand reveals how Blue Velvet, Straw Dogs and a bunch of cult New Zealand thrillers are all a part of his Life in Film.

In his 1995 contribution to the British Film Instituteâs Century of Cinema documentary series, Sam Neill described the unique sense of doom and darkness presented in films from Aotearoa New Zealand as the âCinema of Uneaseâ.
There couldnât be a more appropriate addition to this canon than MÄori filmmaker James Ashcroftâs startling debut Coming Home in the Dark, a brutal, atmospheric thriller about a family outing disrupted by an enigmatic madman who calls himself Mandrake, played in a revelatory performance by Canadian Kiwi actor Daniel Gillies (previously best known for CW vampire show The Originals, and as John Jameson in Spider-Man 2). Award-winning MÄori actress Miriama McDowell is also in the small castâher performance was explicitly singled out by Letterboxd in our Fantasia coverage.
Based on a short story by acclaimed New Zealand writer Owen Marshall, Ashcroft wrote the screenplay alongside longtime collaborator Eli Kent. It was a lean shoot, filmed over twenty days on a budget of just under US $1 million. The film is now in theaters, following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, where it made something of an impact.

Creasy007 described the film as âan exciting New Zealand thriller that grabs you tight and doesnât let you go until the credits are rolling.â Jacob wrote: âOne of the most punishingly brutalâboth viscerally and emotionallyâfirst viewings Iâve enjoyed in quite a while. Will probably follow James Ashcroftâs career to the gates of Hell after this one.â
Filmgoers werenât the only ones impressed: Legendary Entertainmentâthe gargantuan production outfit behind the Dark Knight trilogy and Godzilla vs. Kongâpromptly snapped up Ashcroft to direct their adaptation of Devolution, a high-concept novel by World War Z author Max Brooks about a small town facing a sasquatch invasion after a volcanic eruption. (âI find myself deep in Sasquatch mythology and learning a lot about volcanoes at the moment,â says the director, who is also writing the adaptation with Kent.)
Although Coming Home in the Dark marks his feature debut, Ashcroft has been working in the creative arts for many years as an actor and theater director, having previously run the MÄori theater company Taki Rua. As he explains below, his film taps into notions of indigeneity in subtle, non-didactic ways. (Words in the MÄori language are explained throughout the interview.)
Kia ora [hello] James. How did you come to be a filmmaker? James Ashcroft: Iâve always loved film. I worked in video stores from the age thirteen to 21. Thatâs the only other âreal jobâ Iâve ever had. I trained as an actor, and worked as an actor for a long time. So I had always been playing around with film. My first student allowance that I was given when I went to university, I bought a camera, I didnât pay for my rent. I bought a little handheld Sony camera. We used to make short films with my flatmates and friends, so Iâve always been dabbling and wanting to move into that.
After being predominantly involved with theater, I sort of reached my ceiling of what I wanted to do there. It was time to make a commitment and move over into pursuing and creating a slate of scripts, and making that first feature step into the industry. My main creative collaborator is Eli Kent, who Iâve been working with for seven years now. Weâre on our ninth script, I think.
But Coming Home in the Dark, that was our first feature. It was the fifth script we had written, and that was very much about [it] being the first cab off the rank; about being able to find a work that would fit into the budget level that we could reasonably expect from the New Zealand Film Commission. I also wanted to make sure that piece was showing off my strengths and interestsâbeing a character-focused, actor-focused pieceâand something that we could execute within those constraints and still deliver truthfully and authentically to the story that we wanted to tell and showcase the areas of interest that I have as a filmmaker, which have always been genre.
Do you see the film more as a horror or a thriller? Weâve never purported to be a horror. We think that the scenario is horrific, some of the events that happen are horrific, but this has always been a thriller for me and everyone involved. I think, sometimes, because of the premiere and the space that it was programmed in at Sundance, being in the Midnight section, thereâs a sort of an association with horror or zany comedy. For us itâs more about, if anything, the psychological horror aspect of the story.Â
Itâs violent in places, obviously, but thereâs very little violence actually committed on screen. Itâs the suggestion. The more terrifying thing is what exists in the viewerâs mind [rather] than necessarily what you can show on screen. My job as a storyteller is to provoke something that you can then flesh out and embellish more in your own psyche and emotions. Itâs a great space, the psychological thriller, because it can deal with the dramatic as well as some of those more heightened, visceral moments that horror also can touch on.

Thereâs a strong MÄori cast in your film. Do you see yourself as a MÄori filmmaker, or a filmmaker who is Maori? Well, Iâm a MÄori everything. Iâm a father, Iâm a husband, Iâm a friend. Everything that I do goes back to my DNA and my whakapapa [lineage]. So thatâs just how I view my identity and my world. In terms of categorizing it, I donât put anything in front of who I am as a storyteller. Iâm an actor, Iâm a director. I follow the stories that sort of haunt me more than anything. They all have something to do with my experience and how I see the world through my identity and my lifeâpast, present and hopefully future.
In terms of the cast, Matthias Luafutu [who plays Mandrakeâs sidekick Tubs], heâs Samoan. Miriama McDowell [who plays Jill, the mother of the family] is MÄori. I knew that this story, in the way that I wanted to tell it, was always going to feature MÄori in some respect. Both the âcouplesâ, I suppose you could sayâHoaggie [Erik Thomson] and Jill on one side and Tubs and Mandrake on the otherâI knew one of each would be of a [different] culture. So I knew I wanted to mirror that.
Probably more than anything, I knew if I had to choose one role that was going to be played by a MÄori actor, it was definitely going to be Jill, because for me, Jillâs the character that really is the emotional core and our conduit to the story. Her relationship with the audience, we have to be with herâa strong middle-class working mother who has a sort of a joy-ness at the beginning of the film and then goes through quite a number of different emotions and realizations as it goes along.
Those are sometimes the roles that MÄori actors, I often feel, donât get a look at usually. Thatâs normally a different kind of actor that gets those kinds of roles. And then obviously when Miriama McDowell auditions for you itâs just a no-brainer, because she can play absolutely anything and everything. I have a strong relationship with Miriama from drama-school days, so I knew how to work with her on that.
Once you put a stake in the ground with her, then we go, right, so this is a biracial family, and her sons are going to be MÄori and thatâs where the Paratene brothers, who are brothers in real life, came into the room, and we were really taken with them immediately. We threw out a lot of their scripted dialogue in the end because what we are casting is that fundamental essence and energy that exists between two real brothers that just speaks volumes more than any dialogue that Eli and I could write.

What was your approach to the locations? [The area we shot in] is very barren and quite harsh. I spent a lot of time there in my youth, and I find them quite beautiful places. They are very different kinds of landscapes than you normally see in films from our country. We didnât want to go down The Lord of the Rings route of images from the whenua [land] that are lush mountains and greens and blues, even though thatâs what Owen Marshall had written.
I was very keen, along with Matt Henley, our cinematographer, to find that duality in the landscape as well, because the whole story is about that duality in terms of people, in terms of this world, and that grey space. So thatâs why we chose to film in those areas.
Regarding the scene where Tubs sprinkles himself with water: including this MÄori spiritual element in the film created quite a contrast. That character had partaken in something quite evil, yet still follows a mundane cultural tradition around death. What are your thoughts on that? Yeah. Iâm not really interested in black-and-white characters of any kind. I want to find that grey space that allows them to live within more layers in the audienceâs mind. So for meâand having family who have spent time in jail, or knowing people who have gone through systems like state-care institutions as well as moving on to prisonâjust because you have committed a crime or done something in one aspect of your life, that doesnât mean that there isnât room and there arenât other aspects that inform your identity that you also carry.
Itâs something that heâs adopted for whatever reasons to ground him in who he is. And they can sit side by side with being involved in some very horrendous actions, but also from Tubsâ perspective, these are actions which are committed in the name of survival. You start to get a sense Mandrake enjoys what he does rather than doing it for just a means to the end. So any moment that you can start to create a greater sense of duality in a person, I think that means that thereâs an inner life to a world, to a character, thatâs starting to be revealed. Thatâs an invitation for an audience to lean into that character.

What is the film that made you want to get into filmmaking? The biggest influence on me is probably David Lynchâs Blue Velvet. I saw that when I was ten years old. A babysitter, my cousin, rented it. Itâs not a film that a ten-year-old should see, by the way. I was in Lower Hutt, there in my auntyâs house, and it was very cold, and thereâs a roaring fire going. My cousin and her boyfriend were sitting on a couch behind me, and they started making out. I sort of knew something was going on behind me and not to look. So I was stuck between that and Dennis Hopper huffing nitrous, and this very strange, strange world opening up before me on the television.
Iâve had a few moments like that in my life [where a] film, as well as the circumstance, sort of changed how I view the world. I think something died that day, but obviously something was born. You can see what Lynch did in those early works, especially Blue Velvet. You donât have to go too far beneath the surface of suburbia or what looks normal and nice and welcoming to find that thereâs a complete flip-side. Thereâs that duality to our world, which we like to think might be far away, but itâs actually closer than you think.
That speaks to Coming Home in the Dark and why that short story resonated with me the first time I read it. Even in the most beautiful, scenically attractive places in our land, many different types of feet walk across those lands, and the land in that sense is quite indifferent to who is on it. I like that duality. I like that sense of weâre never as safe as we would like to think. Blue Velvet holds a special place in my heart.
What other films did you have in mind when forming your approach to Coming Home in the Dark? Straw Dogs, the Peckinpah film. The original. Just because it plays in that grey space. Obviously times have changed, and you read the film in different ways now as you might have when it first came out. But that was a big influence because there was a moral ambiguity to that film; those lines of good and bad or black and white, they donât apply anymore. It just becomes about what happens when people are put under extreme pressure and duress, and they abandon all sense of morals. The Offence by Sidney Lumet would be another one, very much drawn to that â70s ilk of American and English filmmaking.

Is there a New Zealand film thatâs influenced you significantly? Thereâs a few. I remember watching The Lost Tribe when it was on TV. That really scared me. I just remember the sounds of it. Mr. Wrong was a great ghost story. That stuck with me for a long time. The Scarecrow. Once I discovered Patu! [Merata Mitaâs landmark documentary about the protests against the apartheid-era South African rugby tour of New Zealand in 1981], that sort of blew everything out of the water, because that was actually my first induction and education that this was something that even occurred. I think I saw that when I was about eighteen. That this was something that occurred in our history and had ramifications that were other than just a rugby game.
And Utu, every time I watch that, it doesnât lose its resonance. I get something new from it every time. Itâs a great amalgamation of identity, culture, of genre, and again, plays in that grey space of accountability. Utu still has that power for me. Itâs one of those films, when itâs playing, Iâll end up sitting down and just being glued to the screen.
Itâs a timeless classic. I will admit that when I watched your film, The Scarecrow did immediately come to mind, as did Garth Maxwellâs Jack Be Nimble. Yeah. [Jack Be Nimble] was really frightening. Again, it was that clash of many different aspects. There was a psychosexual drama there. Youâve got this telekinetic mind control and that abuse and that hunkering down of an isolated family. There are plenty of New Zealand films that have explored a sort of similar territory. Theyâre all coming to me now.
Bad Blood has a great sense of atmosphere and photography and the use of soundscape to create that shocking sense of isolation and terror in these quick, fast, brutal moments, which then just sort of are left to ring in the air. But I love so much of New Zealand cinema, especially the stuff from the â80s.

Hacks 2021 Emmy Award Nominations
Hacks stars Jean Smart as Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedy diva looking to appeal to a younger audience. Vance's agent sends Ava (Hannah Einbinder), an entitled 25-year old, to help freshen up the material, and Vance begins mentoring her. The comedy series on HBO Max was awarded 15 Primetime Emmy Award nominations including Best Comedy, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for Smart and Einbinder.
